Kazan Federal University

     Kazan Imperial University was founded in 1804. During the first decades of its existence the institution formed a number of big and famous scientific schools (mathematics, chemical, medical, linguistic, geological, geobotanical). Since the first half of 19th century Kazan University has the largest center of Oriental Studies in Europe and the alma-mater to the world famous Kazan Linguistic School founded by Baudouin de Courtney. There was development of non-Euclidean geometry, theory of chemical structure of organic compounds, chemistry of organophosphorus compounds.
     Kazan Federal University is a cultural and educational center. It contributed to the appearance of the first regional newspaper, the development of theatrical life, etc. In 2015 Kazan Federal University was included in times Higher Education World University Rankings, holding the 4thplace amongst 18 Russian universities.
     The University consists of 16 Institutes, 3 Higher Schools, Faculty of Law, and 2 regional branches. More than 40,000 students enrolled in 479 degree programs at undergraduate and postgraduate level (including 85 doctoral and 8 double-degree programs with partner universities).
     Priority research areas are biomedicine and pharmaceutics, oil extraction, oil refining and petrochemistry, informational communication and aerospace technologies, advanced materials, and social sciences along with humanities.
