Novosibirsk State University

     Novosibirsk State University was established in 1958. On September 29, 1959 Academician S.L. Sobolev gave the first lecture to the students of the new University.
     The University was developing together with Novosibirsk Scientific Center focusing on training highly qualified specialists for science and education. Since its establishment the total number of NSU graduates has exceeded 50 000. More than 6 000 of them have defended their Ph.D. theses, over 1600 have been awarded Doctor’s degree. 48 graduates of NSU have become full members of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
     The University aims at training high-profile specialists for science, education and science-intensive industry. Professional integration is a key factor in developing relations between science and education, and this model is successfully implemented in collaboration with businesses. The faculty members at NSU include about 80% of the staff of Novosibirsk Scientific Center research institutes, who represent world-class scientific schools and train students. In 2009 NSU was awarded the status of a National Research university.
     The University comprises research institutes that operate in more than 130 scientific directions. NSU contributes to such areas of research as nanotechnologies, electronics, medical biotechnologies, laser systems, innovative therapies for more effective cancer treatment, molecular design of new medical supplies, biodegradation of oily wastes.
