Tomsk Polytechnic University

     Tomsk Polytechnic University is the oldest technical university in Russia to the east of the Urals. The University was founded in 1896 and opened in 1900 as the Tomsk Technological Institute. In 1925 it was renamed into the Siberian Technological Institute. In 1930, the institute was split into five divisions, three of which remained in Tomsk. In 1934, the three institutes in Tomsk were reunited to form the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute. 
     The research is organized into four main interdisciplinary clusters and two supplementary areas. Core areas include physics, electronics, nanotechnology, as well as mechanical, geological and environmental engineering. Two supplementary clusters span telecommunications, software engineering and social sciences. TPU has more than 2 000 academic staff members. About 20 thousand students get education in TPU including more than 5 thousand international students from 42 counries.
