Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

     Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee was officially established in 1847. It was renamed as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854 in the honour of its founder, Sir James Thomason, lieutenant governor 1843–53.
     It was given the status of University in 1948 and was titled the University of Roorkee. It was presented the Charter in November 1949, becoming the first engineering university of independent India. In 2001 it was declared as the nation's seventh Indian Institute of Technology. Then it received the title of an "Institution of National Importance". IIT Roorkee has 21 academic departments covering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences and Management programs with strong emphasis on scientific and technological education and research.
